COLLEGE ADMISSIONS OVERVIEW

The college admissions process can be a daunting experience - especially for those with limited time, tons of extracurriculars, and lots of homework on top of everything else. Thankfully, we've designed a program that aims to demystify the process while providing invaluable resources and introducing structure and order! While this course will focus predominantly on essay writing (crafting a compelling story, showcasing talents in a way that does more than just provide a list, creative style/ structure, etc.), we'll also be going through the entire lifecycle of the application (from start to admission).

Most colleges require either ACT or the SAT with Essay, plus Subject Tests (SAT II's). Scores from one of these college preparatory tests in addition to general student information, a personal statement, student transcript, 2 letters of recommendation, and any supplemental materials make up a complete application. Most colleges also require an application fee to submit your application. These materials are submitted to colleges, sometimes through individual applications, but primarily through the Common Application, a centralized online application that is accepted at over 500 colleges worldwide. Typically, private independent colleges accept the Common App; most smaller and state universities require students to fill out their own applications.

Each year on August 1, the Common App for that academic year is released. There are three main sections of the Common Application: Dashboard, My Colleges, and Common App.

Dashboard

  • This section provides an overview of all the colleges the student is considering applying to, including application deadlines, current progress, and any supplemental materials like essays.

My Colleges

  • My Colleges is where students can view a list of the colleges they’re applying to, complete individual college supplements, and request their letters of recommendations.

Common App

  • This is the main part of the application. Here students input their basic information: name, demographic and family info, school, classes, extracurricular activities, awards and honors, and their personal statement.
